Frequently Asked Questions
The fabric is cut on the bias so will stretch, let it hang for 24hrs and mark a level line with chalk, then cut to this line.
For a half circle, waist measurement ÷ π (Pi) For a full circle (360 degrees), waist measurement ÷ (2 x π (Pi)) For a double circle, waist measurement ÷ (4 x π (Pi)) Use π (Pi) = 3.14159 Then add 0.5″ seam allowance.
For a long flared circle skirt to the floor, you will need approx 3 yards (approx 2.75m) of 54-60″ wide fabric. If you use 44″ wide fabric you will need more, please contact us with your measurements for an exact estimate.
Let the fabric hang first, then press and sew a very fine 1/8″ double fold hem using small stitches. Alternatively you could do a rolled hem. Press as you go.
Use a 5″ wide strip and fold down each side using a 0.5″ seam allowance to make a casing. Cut the elastic to 2″ less than the waist measurement.
If using a sheer fabric, we would recommend lining at least half way up the skirt.
Try one of our wrap circle skirt patterns, there are styles that double wrap around or tie at the side. Alternatively, you could use a close fitting waistband with a hook and eye fastening.
Use layers, circle skirts work well layered over each other. Alternatively try adding a can-can petticoat with hoops or netting underneath, or adding 1-2″ horsehair braid to the hem. Brocade is a great fabric to use as it has good body.
Add an in-seam pocket bag (see our pocket construction tutorial). We would suggest starting about 3.5″ below the waist to avoid the bias effect of the fabric. Use some interfacing to stabilise the pocket opening so it doesn’t stretch.
You will need to piece the skirt panels together side by side using a 0.5″ seam allowance (these side seams will be hidden so don’t worry about them!).
